Pregnancy is an exciting time, but it can also bring physical challenges, especially related to posture and back pain. Many expectant mums seek relief through chiropractic care. But one question comes up often: what’s the best technique during pregnancy?

The Benefits of Chiropractic During Pregnancy & My Research Project
Chiropractic care can be highly effective in relieving back, hip, and pelvic pain—common complaints during pregnancy.
In my final year of chiropractic studies (5 years total!), I conducted a research project with 40 pregnant women. My goal was to evaluate how chiropractic care could impact quality of life, sleep, and pain levels.
Twenty women received chiropractic care for one month, while the other twenty received none.
Results
After just one month, those who had adjustments showed a significant improvement in sleep and quality of life. Most of their pains had disappeared. In contrast, the group without care reported more pain and decreased quality of life.
This project inspired me to specialise even more in prenatal care and to explore paediatrics—so I could also support babies from birth and children as they grow.
Aligning the spine improves posture and also supports the overall well-being of both mum and baby. A proper adjustment helps reduce stress in the body and enhances the function of the nervous system.
Chiropractic Techniques Recommended During Pregnancy
There are several chiropractic techniques specifically designed to be safe and effective during pregnancy.
Here are the most common:
1. The Webster Technique
This is one of the most recommended approaches. It focuses on realigning the pelvis and improving mobility. This helps the baby move into an optimal position and eases lower back pain, making labour more comfortable.
Created by Dr Larry Webster, this technique enhances the neuro-biomechanical function of the sacral and pelvic areas. By correcting sacral subluxations and sacroiliac joint dysfunctions, it promotes better pelvic balance.
It helps reduce the risk factors linked to dystocia (difficult labour), supporting safer and more natural births. It’s now widely used around the world with excellent results.

Spinning Babies even mentions the Webster Technique as a natural method to help turn breech babies.
I’m certified in the Webster Technique—you can check that here.
2. SOT Technique (Sacro-Occipital Technique)
This gentle approach targets the sacrum and skull—areas often affected by postural changes during pregnancy. It’s ideal if you’re looking for a more passive and non-invasive method.

It uses special wedges known as “SOT blocks” (as shown in the photo above) to balance the pelvis. The adjustment happens passively, using the patient’s own body weight.

3. Activator Technique
This technique uses a small handheld instrument (called an Activator) to deliver gentle and precise adjustments without manual manipulation. It’s ideal for pregnant women who are sensitive to joint movement or prefer not to have manual adjustments.

The Activator delivers a quick, low-force impulse to specific points. It’s also great for children and older adults with osteoarthritis.
So, What’s the Best Technique?
Even though the Webster Technique is considered a cornerstone of chiropractic care during pregnancy, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer.
The best technique for you depends on your specific needs, your stage of pregnancy, and your chiropractor’s assessment. What matters most is receiving care that is personalised and adapted to each phase.
Safety & Precautions
Always choose a chiropractor trained specifically in prenatal care. Make sure the techniques used are safe for pregnancy. You should feel heard, safe, and confident in your care.
Conclusion
Chiropractic care can be a powerful ally for a more comfortable pregnancy. It helps relieve pain, improves posture, and prepares your body for labour.
Webster, SOT, and Activator are all safe and effective, but the most important thing is finding the right fit for you.
